Background

Orlando Health is a nonprofit healthcare organization that spans nine Florida counties with nearly 450 locations. In early 2020, Orlando Health and Jewett Orthopedic Clinic united to bring together the top orthopedic and sports medicine practices in the region. This partnership was the catalyst for a premier destination orthopedic facility dedicated to the latest and safest technologies in orthopedic care as well as outstanding customer service and exceptional patient outcomes.

Challenge

Orlando Health and the Jewett partnership envisioned a premier destination orthopedic facility — the first dedicated orthopedic specialty hospital in the state of Florida. The program required coordinated delivery of an inpatient hospital, an ambulatory surgery center, and a medical office building on a unified campus, alongside specialized features like smart patient rooms and an education and research center, all within the initial budget and timeline.

Solution

Orlando Health engaged Hammes as project manager for the new Orlando Health Jewett Orthopedic Institute, which broke ground in November 2020. Despite challenges related to the COVID pandemic, the project met its targeted August 2023 completion date. Smart patient rooms and an education and research center were additions to the project that Hammes helped successfully incorporate within the initial budget and timeline.

The new facility consists of a 197,170-SF inpatient hospital with 75 beds and 10 ORs; a 64,900-SF ASC comprised of 12 ORs; and a 108,600-SF MOB featuring 67 exam rooms, outpatient rehab, sports medicine, sports performance, retail pharmacy, and café. The hospital is the first dedicated orthopedic specialty hospital in the state of Florida and is intended to serve as a destination for orthopedic and sports medicine care across the region.
