Nicklaus Children’s Hospital - Advanced Pediatric Care Pavilion

Background

Nicklaus Children's Hospital is South Florida's only licensed specialty hospital exclusively for children. Nicklaus Children's Hospital launched an ambitious plan for a new Advanced Pediatric Care Pavilion that would relocate its three internationally recognized intensive care units — Cardiac Intensive Care Unit, Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, and Pediatric Intensive Care Unit — to a new state-of-the-art setting, enhancing the care environment.

Challenge

Nicklaus envisioned a space with a "Glorious Place of Arrival" where patients and their families felt a sense of caring and ease of wayfinding from the minute they arrived on campus. Planning goals included analyzing current square footage relative to the best use of available and future space, maximizing operational flow for patients, staff, and materials, capitalizing on adjacencies of services, integrating short- and long-term strategies, considering capital resources, and utilizing a practical approach to implementation and reuse strategies. In addition, Nicklaus wanted to convert critical care units to private bedrooms to provide more privacy and homelike comforts for critically ill children and their families.

Solution

Hammes was engaged by Nicklaus to develop the master facility plan that would set the foundation for a new and renovated space that would accomplish its goals. After careful review of the market/volume assessment, facilities assessment, visioning sessions, flow mapping, and operational assessments, Hammes provided Nicklaus Children's with seven expansion scenarios that included preliminary project phasing, duration schedules, and conceptual project budgets.

Hammes was later engaged by Nicklaus to provide all project management services necessary for the 213,000 SF, six-story Advanced Pediatric Care Patient Pavilion. Working with Nicklaus and their project team, the scope of services included overall project management, budget, schedule, selection of project team, construction administration, medical equipment coordination, and occupancy/close-out. The project was delivered on time and under budget with over $5 million in savings being redirected to the additional scope for the project and other capital needs.
