Life at Hammes
Based in New York State, Mohawk Valley Health System (MVHS) serves the geographic area of Oneida, Herkimer, and Madison counties and is an integrated delivery system with 4,200 full-time employees. In 2017, MVHS was awarded a $300M grant from the state of New York for a new hospital.
In planning for the new hospital, MVHS wanted to consolidate two acute-care campuses into one new campus location.
Hammes was first engaged by MVHS to provide master facility planning and feasibility studies to evaluate the potential consolidation of the system's existing campuses into a new urban campus.
Hammes was subsequently engaged to provide project management, operational readiness, and transition planning services for the new 373-bed replacement hospital in downtown Utica and related initiatives. As project manager, Hammes assisted with the land acquisition process, selected the development team, supported MVHS leadership in their discussions with the New York Department of Health and local authorities, and oversaw the design and construction of the entire program to ensure an on-time and on-budget completion. Given additional requirements as part of the state grant, Hammes also ensured close coordination with the Department of Health along with separate financial tracking to demonstrate the utilization of funds.
Hammes' Operational Readiness team provided transition and move management services for the entire consolidation and move to the new single-campus hospital site. This complex transition included significant IT impacts, medical equipment, and training requirements for up to 2,800 staff and providers. In conjunction with our move management partner, Hammes facilitated a phased move, which included relocating up to 250 patients in one day.
The new Wynn Hospital of Mohawk Valley Health System successfully opened to patients on October 29, 2023, spanning 702,000 square feet. It includes an emergency department, imaging and cardiology, interventional services, inpatient surgeries, a birthing center, conference and meeting space, and a third-party parking garage development.
