Background

Hammes supported Bon Secours Mercy Health with master planning for Maryview Medical Center and ambulatory network planning for the greater Portsmouth area. In advance of the opening of a nearby affiliated hospital, system leadership sought an integrated strategy that would clarify the future roles of both campuses, align services with community needs, and inform long-term facility and capital decisions.

Challenge

System leadership needed a clear understanding of how evolving patterns of care would influence demand across the two campuses and how ambulatory services could support a coordinated regional strategy. The planning process also needed to account for the characteristics of the existing Maryview campus, current facility utilization, and opportunities for phased investment.

Although the campuses served distinct communities, their service areas and care delivery strategies were interconnected. Bon Secours Mercy Health required a forward-looking plan that would establish complementary campus roles while supporting access, operational sustainability, and responsible capital stewardship.

The focus of the master planning effort was Maryview Medical Center, a 350-bed acute care hospital that has served the Portsmouth community in its current location since 1945. This master planning process had to identify opportunities to develop growth capacity for key services while accounting for aging components of the facility and site limitations.

Solution

Hammes combined market analysis, demand modeling, facility assessments, and strategic planning to develop an integrated master planning framework for Maryview and the surrounding ambulatory network. The work identified opportunities to enhance the use of the existing campus, align future services with projected community demand, and establish a phased approach to facility investment.

Hammes also modeled potential shifts in patient demand associated with the evolving regional care network and evaluated ambulatory opportunities that could improve access, care coordination, and connectivity across the system. These findings were translated into facility requirements, development considerations, and long-term capital priorities.

The master plan for Maryview Medical Center provided phased scenarios for renovations and improvements throughout the campus that would minimize disruption to existing operations while projects were being completed. These solutions provided capacity in key areas, promoted overall access to the campus, improved patient and staff flow, and gave the campus future expansion opportunities.
